Contractors License Experience Outline

I wanted to take a few moments to discuss the importance of creating a properly formatted California Contractors License experience outline.

For every trade, there are a few keywords the CSLB application technician is looking for. For the B classification, they want to see framing and at least two unrelated trades listed.

What I see too often is administrative duties being listed on the app. The CSLB won’t accept that as valid experience because they assume that if you are going into business, you should already know how to take care of the business, or administrative side of things.

  • Don’t list: Preparing contracts
  • Do list: Duties specific to your trade
  • Don’t list: Reviewing plans
  • Do list: What you do daily on the job site
  • Don’t list: Decision making
  • Do list: Key elements of your trade classification
  • Don’t list: Specific projects. Make it an overall outline of your trade duties

These are the basics. If you need help preparing your CSLB contractors license experience outline or application, send me an email, a text, or call and I’d be happy to help you.

  1. I am applying for a c12. I have 3 years and 9 months experience at my previous employer. Am I able to have a contractor sign off on my remaining 3 months ?

      1. Yes I have 3 years and 9 months of pipeline and earth moving experience I currently am running my own little business self employed for contractors. I should be able to have them sign off the remaining 3 months can’t I ?

        1. The certifier is irrelevant. You need four years of field experience. If you have a four year degree, that could be used for credit toward the 48 month minimum requirement.

  2. If I was an unlicensed carpenter, who was working for a owner/builder and now I’m trying to get my license using them as a certifier, would I mark self employed or list them as business where I gained experience

    1. You would submit the experience as self employed and anyone with firsthand knowledge of your experience could be the certifier. If that person is not a contractor or journeyman, you/they would check the Business Associate box.
