Decoding Contractor Licenses: A Guide to Remediation and Building!

For removing damaged materials and drying out a structure, a C61/D64-Non-Specialized license is a must. If reconstruction is part of the plan, you need a B-General Building license. Knowing the right classifications is crucial for doing the job correctly and legally.

Considering a career as a licensed contractor in California? Here’s what you need to know about the four-year journeyman-level experience requirement!

What is “Journeyman-Level Experience”? This isn’t just a fancy term. It means you’re a fully qualified, experienced worker—not a trainee or apprentice—who can perform a specific trade without supervision. The experience must be gained as a journeyman, foreman, supervisor, or even a contractor.

The 4-Year Rule You must have at least four full-time years of this experience within the last ten years in the classification you’re applying for. The years don’t have to be consecutive, but you need to show a combined total of four years.

Education can help! If you have relevant education, it can be a big help. The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) may grant you credit for technical training, apprenticeship programs, or college education. You can substitute up to three years of the required four years of experience, but you must still have at least one year of practical, on-the-job experience.

Verification is Key Your experience must be verifiable. You’ll need a qualified person—like a former employer, a fellow journeyman, or a supervisor—to certify your work. Be prepared to provide documentation like tax forms, pay stubs, contracts, and invoices if the CSLB requests it.

This is a crucial step on the path to becoming a licensed contractor in California. #CaliforniaContractor #CSLB #ContractorLicense #Journeyman #ConstructionCareer #contractorslicense #construction #remediation #licensedcontractor
