Massive CSLB Rate Increases Coming

There will be massive CSLB rate increases coming on January 1, 2022!

Historicaly speaking, CSLB rate increases are comparatively small, but covid appears to have changed that.  The CSLB lost a lot of money in 2020 and 2021, so they’re going to up the ante for almost every category of application.  Hold on to something, because here they are:

  1. The fees for applications are as follows:
    1. An application for an original license in a single classification is $450. Is currently $300.
    2. An application for each additional classification applied for in connection with an original license is $150. Is currently $75.
    3. An application for each additional classification pursuant to Section 7059 is $230. Is currently $150.
    4. An application to replace a responsible managing officer, responsible managing manager, responsible managing member, or responsible managing employee pursuant to Section 7068.2 is $230. Is currently $150.
    5. An application to add personnel, other than a qualifying individual, to an existing license is $125. Is currently $100.
    6. An application for an asbestos certification examination is $125. Is currently $83.
    7. An application for a hazardous substance removal or remedial action certification examination is $125. Is currently $83.
  2. The fees for scheduling examinations are as follows:
    1. Rescheduling an examination for an applicant who has applied for an original license, additional classification, a change of responsible managing officer, responsible managing manager, responsible managing member, or responsible managing employee, or for an asbestos certification or hazardous substance removal certification is $100. Is currently $60.
    2. Scheduling or rescheduling an examination for a licensee who is required to take the examination as a condition of probation is $100.
  3. The fees for initial license and registration fees are as follows:
    1. The initial license fee for an active or inactive license for an individual owner is $200. Remains the same.
    2. The initial license fee for an active or inactive license for a partnership, corporation, limited liability company, or joint venture is $350. Is currently $200.
    3. The registration fee for a home improvement salesperson is $200. Is currently $83.
  4. The fees for license and registration renewals are as follows:
    1. The renewal fee for an active license for an individual owner is $450. Remains the same.
    2. The renewal fee for an inactive license for an individual owner is $300. Is currently $225.
    3. The renewal fee for an active license for a partnership, corporation, limited liability company, or joint venture is $700. Is currently $450.
    4. The renewal fee for an inactive license for a partnership, corporation, limited liability company, or joint venture is $500. Is currently $225 (ouch).
    5. The renewal fee for a home improvement salesperson registration is $200. Is currently $83.
  5. Miscellaneous fees are as follows:
    1. The fee to change the business name of a license as it is recorded under this chapter is $100.  Is currently $0.

Additional Fees

  • Delinquency fee is 50 percent of the renewal fee if renewed after expiration.  The delinquent fee is currently a flat $675 ($695 for C-10).  The new fee would remain the same for sole owner licenses, but it will be a whopping $1050 for all other license types.
  • An inactive license may be reactivated by paying the full renewal fee for an active license
  • Service fee for cashier’s check in lieu of bond is $100
  • Duplicate copy of any license certificate $25
  • Service charge for dishonored check is $25

So, for a partnership, corporation, limited liability company, or joint venture the total fee for a new license with one classification will be $800, currently it’s $530.  Submit a waiver app with an additional class and you’re looking at $1030!!

Looks like I’ll need to have one heck of an org chart to know what fee is what for which type of application.  And I’m sure this will turn out to be a nightmare for the CSLB cashiering unit as they’ll most likely be returning a lot of apps for incorrect fees.

The government just keeps taking more and more and more of our money.
